Otra vieja gloria superviviente del siglo XIX es Engineering Index, más conocido quizá como Compendex (Computerized Engineering Index), su versión como base de datos en línea, elaborada por Engineering Information.
En 1884 un profesor de ingeniería civil, Samuel B. Johnson, empezó a publicar anualmente en la revista Journal of the Association of Engineering Societies un apartado titulado «Index Notes» con referencias y resúmenes de la literatura tecnológica del momento (unas 1.000 citas de unas 100 revistas el primer año). Después, cada cuatro o cinco años, se fueron publicando varios volúmenes acumulativos, titulados Engineering Index desde 1896. Y a partir de 1906 aparecieron ya como volúmenes anuales independientes.
En 1919, Engineering Index pasó a pertenecer a la ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), en colaboración con la Engineering Societies Library (ESL), una biblioteca tecnológica cooperativa de diversas asociaciones profesionales de ingenieros, en Nueva York. Engineering Index indizaba las revistas que se recibían en la ESL (1.200 en 1919), y la biblioteca colaboraba en la redacción del repertorio y en servicios de documentación vinculados al mismo (como Ei Card Service, un servicio de distribución de fichas bibliográficas bajo perfiles). A partir de 1919, además del volumen anual, se publicaron actualizaciones mensuales en el Journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

En 1934 Engineering Index se constituyó como entidad sin fines lucrativos, bajo la tutela de ASME, y en 1969 se hizo completamente independiente, cambiando la empresa su nombre por el de Engineering Information (Ei) en 1981. Se incorporó al grupo Elsevier como una de sus divisiones comerciales en 1994.
En 1962 la actualización mensual comenzó a aparecer como un volumen independiente también, además del acumulativo anual. Durante la década de los 60 se desarrollaron diversas experiencias con la automatización de Engineering Index, que desembocaron en la creación de la base de datos Compendex en 1969. El primer servicio fue la distribución por suscripción de cintas magnéticas mensuales, pero en 1983 empezó a poderse consultar online a través de distribuidores como Lookheed Dialog y Orbit.
La primera versión de Compendex en cd-rom es de 1985, y en 1995 se empezó a distribuir vía web en la plataforma Ei Village, que sigue siendo ahora una de las formas de usar esta base de datos, en la que hoy en día se integran 650.000 referencias al año, de 5.500 revistas y conferencias pertenecientes a todos los campos de la tecnología.

Luis, gracias pur la historia. I am looking for the 1954 counts, but for Enginering Index I have only 26,597 records in 1954. Also for 2005 I have 687089 records in Compendex. I was wondering what was your reference for the 1954 data in your table?
